When I think of students and engagement, I like to think of the bigger picture and what Pink (2009) describes as mastery, purpose and autonomy. When I plan my lesson and think about HOW to engage students, I ask myself the following three questions to which at least one answer should be 'yes'.

- Are my students going to have an opportunity to refine and improve specific skills?
- Are the individual tasks offered to my students going to be meaningful for them?
- Are my students going to have choice about how they complete work in a way that encourages them to take ownership of their own learning?
