Hawker Brownlow's 10th Annual Thinking & Learning Conference
May 2013
Here with Hawker Brownlow, the founder of Hawker Brownlow Education, at the Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne. Mr. Brownlow went out of his way to give Deakin University 80 free tickets for the 2013 conference. I was lucky enough to get in and I also volunteered for two extra days hosting some of the presenters. The conference was fantastic and very inspiring!! It definitely changed my way of thinking about teaching..

Douglas Fisher is probably the most inspiring and knowledgable educator I came across. Initially I was going to engage in only one of his sessions, however after having seen his 'Checking for Understanding' workshop featuring 'feed-up', feedback and 'feed-forward' , I could not resist and stay in for his next session 'The Formative Assessment Action Plan'. Douglase's work focuses mainly on productive group work, assessment and curriculum design.
Douglas Fisher, PhD, splits his time between being Professor of Language and Literacy at San Diego State University teaching literacy, ELL, reading instruction and intervention, and doctorate research and classroom teacher at a local San Diego high school focusing on English instruction. This lady is outstanding in her area of expertise! Carol Ann Tomlinson is a passionate and dedicated advocate of the differentiated classroom, a stance reflected in her books. In her session 'Instructional Strategies for Differentiation' I learned about a variety of instructional strategies that support teacher attention to learner variance, including both "low prep" and "high prep" examples, as well as illustrations of the strategies.
Carol Ann Tomlinson, EdD, is the Professor of Educational Leadership at Virginia University. Her career in education includes 21 years as a public school teacher and 12 years as a program administrator and her current position. Find out more about Carol Ann Tomlinson here.

Rich Allen, PhD, is one of the presenters I hosted at the conference. This man is an expert when it comes to memory and recall of information. Consequently, Rich's knowledge and application of cognitive learning theory, including how the brain receives, processes, stores and recalls information, forms the foundation for his radical approach to teaching based on tools that create a resonant / meaningful experience for students such as music, movement and repetition. I used Allen's techniques on rounds (refer to Teaching and Learning in ACTION from the Engagement Strategies heading) and they proved to be quite effective.

'Bully Stoppers' Vodcast presentation and recording with Ken Rigby, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, 2013
Professor Ken Rigby is a national consultant for schools and a leading international authority in bullying and victimisation in schools. Ken has been a huge part of the development of the Bully Stoppers toolkit (available on the DEECD website), more specifically Ken has developed the content and advice focusing on the six methods of intervention. Bully Stoppers provides a series of tools and resources that aim to empower school communities to stop all forms of bullying. A Bully Stoppers grants program has also been created, which will give up to 200 schools $5000 each to run a project on bullying. I feel honoured and grateful for being offered a chance to attend this seminar as now I have a very good understanding of WHAT effective intervention methods there are and WHEN to apply each. For more information visit the Bully Stoppers website.

Hawker Brownlow Education Peer Sessions, Deakin University, 2013
As an attendee of a Hawker Brownlow conference I got the opportunity to present to my peers what I learned from the different sessions of the conference. I chose to present works by Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey, namely their 'Gradual Release of Responsibility' framework which focuses on the teacher gradual move from accepting all the responsibility for performing a task to a situation in which the students assume all of the responsibility.
